The pace picked up in the afternoon with the three mandatory (and excellently put together) electives and a session of prefectural meetings. Most people skipped the final mandatory sessions in order to pack their luggage in time to check it in for the journey to their final destinations between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. Most of the non-American JETs attempted to complete their luggage check-in by 6:20 in order to meet up with their compatriots for the embassy receptions. The nations whose embassies welcomed the new JETs were Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and the United Kingdom, the non-participation of the United States embassy being the most notable exception. There being only one JET participant from Thailand this year, the Thai invitation read: “The Embassy of Thailand invites the new Thai JET participant to a welcome dinner. Details are available from the CLAIR Information Desk, 4f.” That’s one special JET!
